When I was a kid, I used to bury myself on the sofa with a pile of books I had borrowed from the library. Some things seem not to change that much. We haven’t had a sofa for years (or TV either) but the pile of books is still essential part of my everyday life.
I simply love reading and I’m always craving more. Almost anything goes from chick lit to business strategies and from nordic noir to poems. For me reading is quality time with myself, it’s a tool for self growth and depending on what’s going on, a perfect way to gain more information on any topic in hand. Google is great but holding a real book in hand is just so much better!
Growing up with books
When I was a kid I also used to make my own books and magazines. I published a horse related magazine when I was on 7th grade and the legend tells that once in the daycare I wanted to do a book about ancient Egypt and was very disappointed when there wasn’t enough source books to go through. I managed to make the book though, with illustrations of pyramids and everything. Oh my!
Nowadays I design books and magazines and get paid to do so! That’s something I’m so happy about and I love projects where I can combine all of these things together and to give something in the copy too. Besides reading I also love to write and wish I could do it even more. I’m firm believer of that to be able to be a great writer you must read a lot first.
Fortunately when I grew up, there has always been enough books to read and be inspired by and I’ve always been encouraged to both read and write. Big thanks goes to my parents who love books and reading too and at the moment I’m trying my best to inherit that to the next generation.
Different books for different times
For me different books are also tools to get in a different mode. If I need to do or design something and I’m reading for information gathering, it’s closer to work. When doing design project for a client I try to do as much background work I can. It might include anything from botanical systems to art history and microbiomes depending on the topic. That’s one part I take very seriously and also one that I love so much.
Good design is always based on knowledge. Not only on knowledge of design but the knowledge and understanding the whole wide world, history, art, literature and so on.
The bloodier the better
When I want to relax I read different books. I’m especially fascinated by nordic noir, detective stories that take place in Scandinavia. I’ve read those for years when I need a break from work. It’s easy, I don’t have to think and it’s fast. My reading lists are always is full of these, the bloodier the better!
Besides work related information and murders to solve, I read a lot of self help, fiction and yes, also poems but with them I’m quite picky (or undeveloped). Sometimes I pick the book by its cover and sometimes because it seems interesting. One of my dreams is to design more book covers, that’s so awesome thing to do!
The last books I’ve read include for example The Anatomy of Winning ** by Aki Hintsa which my friend gave me, several books from Anna Jansson and Sofie Sarenbrant (that’s the nordic noir!), a book about a mute boy imprisoned on his own body and an awesome book about creativity and business leading ** by Timo Kiuru.
The last books I bought but didn’t yet have time to read were The Swarm by Frank Schätzing and a huge illustrated book about galaxies and planets. So as you can see, variation is quite huge.
Piles of books
I prefer physical books but reading so much I have given in to ebooks too. At the moment I use Nextory and have bought several business books as an ebook from Amazon. I’m really disappointed that Amazon Kindle doesn’t work in Finland as many of the business books I’m interested in are available only in there.
At home all this is very visible. I have piles of books everywhere. In the kitchen, on my nightstand, in the closets and on the table, bed, floor, you name it. I’m literally surrounded by books and same goes to our office too. I’ve tried to declutter my books but it’s hard. There are so many good books I want to own, read again or just admire. Changing some of the one-timers to ebooks has had some effect but there’s still quite many left.
Books of 2019
I used to keep a reading list few years ago but then it just got forgotten. This year I wanted to get back on that. It’s interesting to see all of the books you have read in the end of the year and it’s also quick way to check if you have already read something.
Last time I did the listing on Instagram but this year I thought that maybe it could be an actual list so here we go. This is my ongoing reading list for 2019. It includes both books I’ve already read and the books I’ve started but not yet finished for some reason or another. What it doesn’t include are all those books I have but have not yet even started but that’s a whole new story.
As I’m updating the list regularly, you should keep it in your favourites or bookmarks if you want to follow my reading almost on real time.
And now it’s your turn. What’s the last book you read? What’s the one book you would recommend to me?
